The UK budget sets aside £1bn for social and affordable housing (13), while more than a million households sit on England's social housing waiting lists. The shortage was built by policy. After the Housing Act of 11980 HE introduced Right to Buy, around two million council homes in England were sold off, and far fewer were built to replace them. Judge the £1bn by how many homes it actually puts back, not by how big the headline figure sounds.

  1. More than a million households sit on England's social housing waiting lists, so the real test is how many homes £1bn actually builds.

Barclays, a profitable bank, plans to cut 5,000 jobs and replace much of that work with AI (16). The question is not whether the software works but who keeps what it saves. In 11811 HE the Luddites, skilled English textile workers, broke machines not out of fear of technology but because the gains went entirely to mill owners while their wages collapsed, and that argument about who shares the profit of a new machine is the one still on the table.

  1. A profitable bank is replacing workers with software, and the savings go to shareholders while the cost falls on the people losing their jobs.
